Once upon a time, in our galaxy, very, very close by, the greatest training innovations were power-point presentations that laid out the main parts of a lesson in a clear manner.
But today, like becoming a Jedi and upgrading from a clumsy blaster to the subtle beauty of a lightsaber, cloud-based training is taking over and it’s making on-premise training labs look like relics from the ancient past. Here are just seven reasons why they may be holding you back.
- No personalization
Learning is an individual experience. Sure, brainstorming problems and studying with classmates are great tools to get a deeper understanding of the subject matter, but some learn faster and some are simply more motivated than others. In a classroom environment, these trainees are going to be limited, maybe even bored. Meanwhile, the students who struggle with the material lacks the personal approach that will drive him/her forward.
- There’s a need for speed
Let’s face it, the industry isn’t slowing down, it’s gaining speed with every employee added to the team. This means that while training remains one of the most crucial operations a company must perform, there’s no time to waste. On-premise training means organizing special seminars and setting up lessons. Before the class even begins, you may lose days if not weeks in preparation.
- Financial loss
This one is a no-brainer. No company wants to lose money, and now that cloud-based training is a reality, classroom lessons can be viewed as nothing more than a loss. An instructor costs money. A classroom costs money. Required materials – software, books and projectors – cost money. And time is money. With cloud-based training options, trainees can skip the waiting and preparation and start bringing money to the company sooner.

On-premise training labs offer no substantial data on trainees besides an instructor’s general impression of a pupil’s abilities and weaknesses and perhaps one or two tests that are hardly indicative of real progress. Cloud-based/ online training provides personalized data on every employee, offering invaluable information that’s needed to fill information gaps and improve operations in the future.
- The car with one gear
Like a golf cart with just one gear, on-premise training labs are limited in innovation opportunities. Working in a classroom, an instructor may implement the latest teaching techniques with varying degrees of success, but cloud-based training labs have far greater potential to explore methods that work for your company and its new employees. Gamification, for example, plays on the natural competitive instinct and makes learning more like a computer game, as implied in the name. Unless you want to play board games, on-premise training doesn’t offer the same opportunity.

Slideshows and lengthy explanations may yet have a part to play in getting new employees assimilated into the company, but there’s nothing like learning through experience.
