You had the summer to relax, catch up on your training industry reading, and hopefully finalize the rest of your 2019 planning. And now, fall is here. The smell of pumpkin spiced lattes (#PSLs) are filling up the office conference rooms faster than the leaf toss photos hitting your Instagram feed.
For training and learning & development leaders, fall is a great time to prepare for next year’s programs, and perhaps revisit the current strategies you have in place to determine it makes sense for your organization’s annual goals.
To help, we’re at it again with our monthly listicle — a curated list of our favorite insightful articles that training, as well as learning and development pros need to read, now.
Here are the top five we’re falling hard for:
- “Are You Developing Skills That Won’t Be Automated?” — This Harvard Business Review article written by Stephen Kosslyn, psychologist and CEO of Foundry College explores what learning skills knowledge workers should focus on that cannot be automated by machine learning or robots. Hint: It’s got to do with empathy and context. Basically, we’re all safe until robots master and learn empathy like our favorite robot of all time, WALL-E.
- “Does Time Matter For Learning? It Does.” — Whether you’re training customers or employees, it’s inevitable: As a training leader, your stakeholders will push for speed over quality. However, is it really efficient if it doesn’t achieve the needed outcomes? This article from Patti Shank, workplace e-learning expert, explores why valuable training outcomes may take more time than simple content.
- “Lift Off: 4 Training Tips to Successfully Launch Complex New Software Products”– Humblebrag: This one is ours. We can’t help it. We learn so much from our customers that we want to share as much as we can. This article focuses on how training can amp up everyone’s game when launching a new software solution. Whether you’re a customer support specialist on the front lines or a sales engineer readying your golden copy for prospects, we’ve got your virtual training needs covered.
- “The Skills Shortage Dilemma: Buy Or Build?” — With more than 20 years of experience in helping organizations train their workforce, let’s just say Nicholas Wyman knows a thing or two about the current workforce skill shortage. In his latest Forbes article, he looks into a new strategy where a growing number of forward-looking companies are choosing to “build” with apprenticeships and look at training costs as investments for the organization. We’re a fan.
- “The key to mindfulness at work is being in 3 places at once” — When’s the last time you took a step back before you ran a meeting or a lesson and asked yourself, “What is my mental state right now?” If you’re like most of us, it’s probably been awhile — and no shame to that. This post from Atlassian’s product management instructor, examines how leaders can become more mindful and innovative — and then encourage their team to do the same.P.S. — Be sure to bookmark Atlassian’s Work Life blog. The content is smart, insightful and in our somewhat biased opinion, the team is badass. You won’t be disappointed.
